Abstract: This applicaon note presents a circuit that uses a low-power CMOS comparator to provide an LED visual indicaon of a low-battery condion. This LBO (low-battery-indicator) is achieved by pulsing the LED at a low frequency and low duty cycle. The circuit accomplishes this without draining excessive battery current that can lead to permanent battery damage and, ulmately, hazardous waste disposal. This circuit also helps conserve battery current in the off cycle by placing the comparator in shutdown. Equations and circuit analysis are included for determining duty cycle and comparator trip points. The usual method for implementing the low-battery warning featured in most battery-operated equipment is to illuminate an LED. By drawing current, however, the LED exacerbates the low-battery condition. You can greatly reduce the LED's power consumption by operating it at a low frequency and a low duty cycle.An existing low-battery output (LBO) like that found on DC-DC converters offers a convenient way to light the LED (Figure 1). The MAX9030 is a small, inexpensive comparator with shutdown capability in a 6-pin SC70 package. The device remains in shutdown while the battery voltage is at nor it asserts LBO when battery voltage falls below a preset threshold. Figure 1. Operating this low-battery-warning LED at low frequency and low duty cycle saves power and extends battery life.Note that LBO (active high) is usable as shown, but an active-low warning (active-low LBO) requires the optional circuitry shown in the box. The MAX9030 then turns on, causing the LED to flash in accordance with the following analysis:First, keep the duty cycle low:

VTRIPHI = VOUT[R3(R1 + R2)]/[R3(R1 + R2) + R1R2]VTRIPLO = VOUT[R3R2]/[R3(R1 + R2) + R1R2] The typical VOUT for a comparator is VDD. Assuming a 2.5% duty cycle and assuming that LBO trips the comparator on when battery voltage equals 3V, then the resulting trip levels are 1V for low and 2V for high. The standard component values corresponding to this performance are:
C1 = 0.1&FR1 = R2 = R3 = 1MΩR4 = 3.6MΩR5 = 91kΩ The Figure 1 circuit accommodates any type of LBO output (active high or active low). Supply current drawn by the MAX9030 is typically 35&A when active and only 0.05&A while in shutdown. The circuit's small size, low power consumption, and low cost are ideal for battery-powered systems.Batteries can be permanently damaged by frequent low-battery indications or by overdischarge. This is specifically true for nickel metal hydride (NiMh) and Li-ion (Li+) batteries. A fully charged NiMh cell is about 1.4V (unloaded); it supplies a nominal average voltage of 1.2V and can discharge down to about 0.9V. Any further discharge can potentially cause permanent damage to the cell. Also, a fully charged Li+ battery can supply 4.2V (unloaded), and a nominal average voltage of 3.6V. It can discharge down to about 2.5V. Li+ cells must never be discharged below 3V to avoid the possibility of irreversible damage. Once damaged, most of these batteries will end up as hazardous waste and possibly in landfills.Protecting the environment from excessive, hazardous waste disposal is a global concern. This application circuit helps avoid overdischarging batteries, thus reducing both the number of batteries discarded and their negative impact on the environment.A similar version of this article appeared in the May 3, 2001 issue of EDN magazine.

portables use a battery that has an internal processor designed to . One of the functions of the battery's internal processor is to estimate remaining battery life by analyzing the current state of the battery charge, as well as the rate at which power is being consumed.
In order to make accurate predictions about remaining battery charge, the battery and its
need to undergo a calibration routine. The calibration routine helps the processor gauge the battery's current performance and make accurate predictions about the remaining battery charge.
When you buy a MacBook, , or MacBook Air, you should run the battery calibration routine during the Mac's first day of use. Of course, many of us end up
so much we forget all about this necessary step. Luckily, it doesn't hurt the battery if you forget to perform the it just means you're not getting the best possible performance from the battery.
Once the battery has been calibrated, its remaining time indicator will be much more accurate. However, over time, as the battery accumulates charges and discharges, its performance will change, so you should perform the battery calibration routine at regular intervals. Apple suggests calibrating the battery every few months, but I've found that the appropriate time between calibrations is highly dependent on how, and how often, you use your Mac. With that in mind, it's a safe bet that calibrating your battery as many as four times a year won't be excessive.
Start by ensuring your Mac is fully charged. Don't go by the battery instead, plug in the power adapter and charge your Mac until the light ring at the charging jack or the power adapter's light turn green, and the onscreen battery menu indicates a full charge.Once the battery is fully charged, continue to run your Mac from the AC adapter for two hours. You can use your M just be sure the power adapter is plugged in and you're running off AC power and not the Mac's battery.After two hours, unplug the AC power adapter from your Mac. Don't turn your M it will transition to battery power without any trouble. Continue to run the Mac from the battery until the onscreen low battery warning dialog appears. While you wait for the low battery warning, you can continue to use your Mac.Once you see the onscreen low battery warning, save any work in progress, then continue to use your Mac until it automatically goes to sleep because of very low battery power. Don't perform any critical work after you see the low battery warning, because the Mac will go to sleep before long and with no other warning. Once your Mac goes to sleep, turn it off.
After waiting a minimum of 5 hours (longer is fine, but no less than 5 hours), connect the power adapter and fully charge your Mac. Your battery is now fully calibrated, and the internal battery processor will deliver accurate battery time remaining estimates.
There are plenty of ways to reduce battery usage on your M some are obvious, such as dimming the brightness of the display. Bright displays use more energy, so keep it dim as much as possible.
Other ways aren't quite as obvious, such as turning off the Wi-Fi capabilities of your Mac when you’re not using a wireless network connection. Even when you're not actively connected to a wireless network, . You can turn the Wi-Fi capabilities off either from the Wi-Fi menu bar icon, or the Network preference pane.
Disconnect peripherals, including any attached memory cards. Once again, even when you're not actively using a device, your Mac is checking the various ports for any required service a device may need. Your Mac also supplies power through many of its ports, so disconnecting USB-powered , for example, can extend battery time.
