The pineapple is one of the most sought-after juices on the market today. Used widely in alcoholic drinks for its sweetness and in various cooking dishes to accentuate other fruits, it is high in vitamins and minerals and is one of the most popular of all grocery store fruits. The tree is an exotic symbol and has been the focus of many vacations, tourist parties and beach luaus.
HistoryThe pineapple has been a desirable fruits for many years in the United States. It has been used for trade, food and in tribal feasts. The European use of the pineapple can be traced to 1493, when Christopher Columbus and his crew were sailing in the Caribbean. Columbus and his crew discovered piles of the harvested fruit near human body parts on a volcanic island now known as Guadeloupe. The crew ate and documented the fruit. MedicinalPineapple juice has laxative and tonic effects on the body. It can help to soothe gastric irritability. It has also been used for jaundice and fevers. Folk remedies use all parts of the fruit, including the peel and juice. The juice provides the same immune building properties as orange and papaya juice. When sipped, the juice can relieve bronchitis and a sore throat. It's also used to aide in the recovery of tuberculosis by dissolving mucus.
StudiesPineapple contains bromelain, which has anti-inflammatory benefits for the body. According to a study published in Volume 58, Issue 9 of "Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences," bromelain can help with sinusitis, bronchitis and trauma from surgery. Bromelain also enhances the absorption of antibiotics. In the study, bromelain was given to subjects with mammary tumors to complement their tumor therapy. The growth of tumor cells was inhibited. Bromelain was also found to speed wound healing. NutritionPineapple contains a high amount of thiamin and manganese. Thiamin helps to prevent depression by maintaining a healthy nervous system. Manganese is an important mineral that is used in the production of energy. There is also a high amount of vitamin C in pineapple. Vitamin C is beneficial for the prevention of many diseases because it acts as an antioxidant. The Vitamin B6 in pineapple helps to control hormone levels and to nourish the nervous system to prevent emotional disorders. WarningsAlthough the pineapple is delicious and sought after for its unique sweetness, the juice of the unripe fruit can be dangerous. If large quantities are consumed, vomiting, skin rash and diarrhea can occur. If the pineapple juice is consumed by pregnant women, it should be in small quantities. Pineapple can cause a uterine contraction that might cause an accidental abortion.

Article excerpt
TODAY they will gather to worship the king of fruit.
The Big Pineapple has been given a fresh coat of paint, sprucing up the giant spiked fruit that has depressed passing drivers since it began ping-ponging in and out of receivership.
Markets have been running for just a few weeks, yet they are already earning a reputation of delivering for Coast foodies.
More than 400 people will come from across the Coast to return to their tropical Graceland for the pineapple's reunion, remembering times when people would start early and finish late.
It was a passion fuelled by their love of the attraction and plenty of sugar highs.
The reunion was scheduled to coincide with the pineapple's 40th birthday in August, but news of an ownership change encouraged a delay until this morning.
With owners Big Pineapple Corp releasing its plans for the icon, guests can be more than nostalgic, they can be hopeful. The chocolate and nut factories, sadly, will not be coming back.
General manager Paul Ziebarth is the man who must deliver on big ambition.
His background with the Northey St Organic Markets in inner Brisbane is a snug fit with what owners hope to create a a food-lovers' paradise.
aThe markets are the start of that because they are rapidly becoming a mecca for Sunshine Coast food producers to show their products to the public,a he said.
aIt had a reputation for that in the old days and we would do it in a way that it links in very heavily with the local growers and producers of local food.a
He has a vision of rejuvenating the pineapple and surrounds, but will have to fight the neglect that has tainted every corner of the site.
Work so far has been focused on refurbishing the pineapple and the market areas. Next comes the train and new life will be breathed into the stripped buildings.
In her book, freelance journalist Kerry Brown explored the history of the pineapple through those who worked there.
She said she was galvanised into writing because few on the Coast knew its history.
aEven though it sat on the side of the highway looking horrible and faded, I could remember the buses lining up along the highway all day every day,a she said.
aThey would come from all around for icecreams and train rides. How did icecreams go so wrong? That's what got my interest.a
She spoke to the train-builders, the parfait artists and Nutmobile pilots.
Her hunt for anecdotes even led her to contact media magnate Rupert Murdoch who ended up owning the site when News Limited acquired Queensland Newspapers.
Mr Murdoch did not have a chance to chat, but Ms Brown was told that he was keen to give the book a read. …

The story of how the song “Happy Birthday to You”came into being, began as a sweet one, which later soured. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kinder-garten(幼儿园), and Dr Patty Hill, the principal(院长,负责人)of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister's expertise(专长)in the area of Kin-dergarten Education, “Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success.
The sisters published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Twenty-one years later, after Dr Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission. To add insult(侮辱)to injury, he added a second verse, the familiar “Happy Birthday to You”.
Mr Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, finally, the sisters' original first verse disappeared. “Happy Birthday to You”, the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters' original title, “Good Morning to All”.
After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, took Mr Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed(确定), owned the melody(曲调). Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties(版税)from it, whenever it is sung for commercial(商业的)purposes.

(4)Which of the following statements is NOT true?

B.The second verse made the song popular and, at last, the first verse disappeared.
C.Patty and Jessica took Robert H. Coleman to court after Mildred died.

Plants have family values, it seems, with new research suggesting they can recognize close relatives in order to work together. An ability to tell family from strangers is well known in animals, allowing them to cooperate and share resources, but plants may possess similar social skills, scientists believe.Susan Dudley and Amanda File of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, report they have demonstrated for the first time that plants can recognize their kin. This suggests that plants, though lacking recognition and memory, are capable of complex social interactions.“Plants have this kind of hidden but complicated social life,” Dudley said. The study found plants from the same species of beach&-dwelling wildflower grew aggressively alongside unrelated neighbors but were less competitive when they shared soil with their families.Sea rocket, a North American species, showed stronger and healthier root growth when planted in pots with strangers than when raised with relatives from the same maternal(母系的) family, the study found. This is an example of kin selection, a behavior common in animals in which closely related individuals take a group approach to succeeding in their environment, the researchers said.Kin selection also applies to competition, because if family members compete less with each other, the group will do better overall. “Everywhere you look, plants are growing right up next to other plants,” Dudley said,“ Usually it’s a case of each plant for itself. But sometimes those plants are related, and there are benefits to not wasting resources on being competitive, and there is not really a cost to not being competitive as long as your neighbor is also not being competitive.”Learning and memory appear to be important for kin recognition in animals, but this isn’t an option for plants, she noted. Some researchers speculate(猜测) that plants communicate through their roots, identifying themselves using tiny chemical signatures specific to each plant’s family.【小题1】What’s the main idea of the message?A.Studies find plants can recognize, communicate with relatives.B.Kin selection is important for plants.C.Animals can recognize and memorize their relatives.D.Competition asks plants to recognize their relatives.【小题2】Which of the following is NOT right about animals’ social skill?A.Animals can recognize and memorize their relatives.B.Animals’ social skill is to cooperate and share resources.C.Animals’ social skill can recognize close relatives in order to work together.D.Animals’ social skill is no use at all.【小题3】Plants’ kin selection is to ________.A.grow wellB.compete with other kinds of plants C.strengthen the relationship among siblingsD.find which one is the best【小题4】From the passage,we learn that ________.A.sea rocket is a South American speciesB.sea rocket grows aggressively alongside unrelated neighborsC.sea rocket grows aggressively alongside its siblingsD.sea rocket is a kind of bush without flowers【小题5】How can the plants communicate with each other according to experts’ suppose?A.Plants communicate by using tiny chemical signatures specific to each plant’s family.B.Plants communicate with each other through their roots.C.Plants communicate with each other by their leaves.D.Plants communicate with each other with their flowers.
