I remember the delight with which some six months ago I picked up the first "Dolittle" book in the Hampshire bookshop at Smith College in Northampton. Before returning to Bilibin's Prince Andrew had gone to bookshop to provide himself with some books for the campaign, and had spent some time in the shop. For instance, the bookshop at the corner was now selling fish. As I was loitering along the High-street, looking in disconsolately at the shop windows, and thinking what I would buy if I were a gentleman, who should come out of the bookshop but Mr. Well, sir, if it isn't too great a liberty, I am a neighbour of yours, for you'll find my little bookshop at the corner of Church Street, and very happy to see you, I am sure. Isn't that a fancy name for potassium permanganate?
Or alternatively you could do this.
Prepare a solution of 6 ounces of
potassium permanganate and 6 ounces of
magnesium sulphate in 2 quarts of hot water. Simply apply with a brush until
you get desired effect. lightly sand with 22o and then apply finish. Check out
your local pharmacist or chemical supply house for supplies.

WHITEYS TIMBER POLISH
Sand up to 400-600 grade paper & rub with 0000 steel wool.
parts of raw tung oil, boiled linseed oil & satin poly-urethane.
oil mix into timber with clean, soft cloth.
Rub well in & then remove
all excess oil with clean cloth.
Repeat this 3-4 times.
Mix equal parts of raw tung oil & boiled linseed oil in a small pot &
place inside a larger pot.
Pour water into the larger pot until half
way up the outsides of the smaller pot.
Then place onto hot plate &
heat up the oil mix slowly.
When warm, place a handful of shredded
beeswax into the oils, & when all the wax has melted, remove from
Stir until cooled (usually takes 2 beers) & then keep this
creamy mix in a air tight jar.
This will keep indefinately.
Rub this into timber 3-6 times (depends on project) & make sure you
remove all excess oil.
This method of polishing furniture dates back
to the 18th century & was handed down to me by my Father (Master
Craftsman).
Remember to soak all oily rags in water after use, as
they can self combust, (& burn down the bloody workshop).
This polish
will repel water, red wine, coffee & hot plate stains.
It gives the
most warm, earthy, touching feel to anything you will ever see.
invites people to touch your furniture, as nature intended.
Any queries ?
ring or Email me.
Only too pleased to pass on this
wonderful finish.
Warm regards.
Gary White.

subject: Re: FREE PLAN - shop vac muffler
Just a note to anyone considering building the shop-vac muffler.
I have the one that was built in the course of writing that article,
and I have a few "tips"...
1) put the exhaust out the side, not out the top.
2) Get some REALLY heavy duty casters for it (100-400 lbs cap. each)
3) Adjust the plans so that (after taking into account the height of
the casters) the top of the case will be whatever you find a good
working height (i.e. the same height as your workbench/table saw
and, if you're really into measuring/mounting everything....
4) Figure out how to put a common base (maybe 3/4 inch plywood) on all
your "portable" tools (thickness planer, CMS, bench grinder, etc).
Make the bases so they all have holes in the same place to be able to
get threaded knobs through the base and into the threaded inserts
you'll put in from the inside surface of the top of the cabinet.
This way you'll have a really nice, rolling workbench with built in
dust collection!

I was journeying to the waste lands, with the citizens lining the

then I received these plans from their designer, Steve Maynard, and so
interrupted my journey to post this..
I was very impressed many weeks ago when I ran across them, and
posted them on the group.
Unfortunately, the link died almost
immediately, and very few were able to see them.
A few weeks ago I decided to try to get them back.
As it turned
out I contacted the wrong people, but they knew who Steve is, and were
gracious enough to pass my request to him.
I asked if he would put the plans back so they would be available,
and asked if he had any objection to me posting them on the group.
in turn, graciously said he would make them available, send me the URL,
and I could post them on the group.
So here is the throne itself, scroll down to the bottom of the
Simple really, but neat as hell in my opinion.

You need a piece of

or draw the design on to the brass backwards. drop in echant untill your
design is raised quite abit. then wash it with water and remove the
paint. (NOTE: I have NOT however, I have used a similar [or
the same] etching solution to etch glass [for glass it is a paste, apply
with a small brush], using stencils. Wear rubber gloves [don't forget
and scratch your nose or rub your ear], rinse under cold running water,
just remember, this is at your own risk. Let me also

subject: RETURNED, with plans
Like Moses, I return.
But unlike the Fifteen
Commandments given to Moses (I understand he dropped one tablet coming
down the mountain),I was blessed by the Woodworking Gods with
woodworking plans.
The first installment which are included here.
these plans, and a batch more I will post later, were ALL found while
using a single search engine to search for a specific subject - which I
still have not yet found.
Oh, yes, I also have new midis.
Now, here are the first of the

And finally, some pay plans, in case you are not satisfied with the free
plans and not too cheap to pop for them.
http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/wwjstore2/webpage3.cfm?DID=1
These plans (except the one)
and 99.99% of all the plans I post use
wood, or wood products, so, yes, they are woodworking related.
I have completed my penance in the waste lands, spent my time
contemplating and repenting my sins. However, had few sins to
contemplate, contrary to some peoples' beliefs,, and don't regret a one.
For a short time (very short) I had a brief note in my sig
block, "don't send me e-mails". This is out. Why? Because I didn't feel
like leaving it there. I will just post periodically on not sending me
e-mails, when I get irritated with the number, or content. Same as
For the one person who complained about me soliciting
sacrifices, consisting of "slightly used virgins". This was done in my
role as High Priest of the Woodworking Gods, so I consider that
religious persecution.
Just be happy I do not advocate child
sacrifices.
I believe the women on the group accepted these posts in
the spirit in which they were intended. At least I have not received any
derogatory comments on these posts from any women, either by e-mail or
on the group. Kinda strange then, it was a guy who
anyway, being a guy, his complaint is disregarded.
For those who do not like me posing some of the types of
free plans that I do, if you don't like them, after all, I
try to make it clear in the subject line what the plan is about.
you are more than welcome to put me in your killfile. Either way, I have
no problem with it.
And yes, I know some of the plans are a bit of BS. Like
making pine cone turkeys. Some of you "too tight" people take offense to
plans like that. Well, I put them out there because One, I think it is
humorous to post something like and Two, because
maybe someone's kid(s) and/or wife/girlfriend would get a kick out of
making something like that. So don't count too much on my stopping
posting such.
Some of you "too tight" people also take offense at my
being a WebTV user. So you use a computer, big deal. Using a computer
does not automatically make you smarter or better than me, and me using
a WebTV does not automatically make me dumb.
There are PLENTY of
examples of computer users being as bad or worse than WebTV users.
In fact, I am brighter (higher IQ) than average. But before you try to
make something out of that statement, there are also a lot of people on
the group who are brighter than me, and some a lot brigher, and a few a
WHOLE LOT brighter.
And t doesn't bother me a bit.
Why should it?
don't try to lord it over anyone that I am "smarter than they are" and
the really bright ones don't try to lord it over me.
Using a WebTV
only means I don't need a computer. Most people I know with computers
use them for surfing the net, sending and receiving e-mail, and as a
word processor. I can do the exact same things with a WebTV.
it plainer, if I actually needed a computer (or wanted one enough), I
wo then I would be smart too. LOL.
good as you are, and as bad as I as bad as I am, I'm as good as you
I am pretty sure I will get a bit of static over the previous
paragraph.
I also feel that 99.99% of the people here will take it as
it was intended, not as a slight to anyone.
I do not save the URLs of the plans I post, unless I am
personally interested in the plan. So if you like a plan, either save
the URL or look it up in the archives later (see my sig block for the
Archives URL), but don't boher asking me for it, because I will not have
it. So, again, as I have explained before, I run across various plans
while searching, and if I think they will be of interest, I post them.
Or, if I think it would be humorous (to me at least) I often post those
I find about 90+% of them searching for an unrelated subject.
If you don't believe that, I was recently searching for info on Richard
Wagner and found Bras For Big Girls. I guess the Valkyries needed some
new lingerie. LOL
Now, if any of you have any complaints at all of me being
back from the waste lands, just pass them on to the newsgroup moderator,
and he/she will take care of them at once.
Just don't send me any
e-mail on it.
